Defective Medical Device Lawyers

The Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System is a metal-on-metal hip implant system developed by DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. The Pinnacle has been associated with premature device failure and other problems that result in swelling, severe pain and the need for revision surgery. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that more than 1,000 cases of Pinnacle failures were reported by 2011. The total number of Pinnacle failure reports is over 2,500.

The Pinnacle system is different from the ASR systems. The socket and ball portion of the Pinnacle system consists of three components: a cup, a metal liner and a femoral ball. There is no liner in the ASR.

Complications and Failure of the DePuy Pinnacle System

As with other metal-on-metal hip implants, the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system was intended to offer high wear resistance and shed less debris particles than other devices. Unfortunately, due to the metal ball and metal liner sliding against each other during walking or running, metal particles may wear off and enter into the space around the implant. Metal particles may even enter the bloodstream.

Over time, these metal particles can cause bone damage and/or tissue damage. The implant can become loose and cause severe pain, which can require another surgery to repair or to replace the system altogether. Despite the number of reports of problems with the Pinnacle hip replacement system, as well as the recall of two other metal-on-metal hip replacement systems, DePuy continues to market and sell the Pinnacle.
