Baltimore-based company Lupin Pharmaceuticals recently recalled some of its Mibelas 24 Fe tablets after it was found that a packaging error had switched the contraceptive tablets with the non-hormonal placebos. Women using this form of birth control may have been taking placebo pills when they believed they were taking contraceptives.

Each set of the pills comes with 28 tablets—24 contain active ingredients and 4 placebos. Traditionally, the placebos are taken during the time when a woman is menstruating to help patients stay in the habit of taking a pill daily.

However, when the blister pack that contained this batch of pills was being placed within its wallet, the package was accidentally rotated 180 degrees, reversing the weekly orientation of the tablet. This allowed the first 4 days to be placebos rather than the contraceptive pills. According to the company, the mistake affected Lot Number L600518 with a May 31, 2018, expiration date.

Because of this error, women were put at risk for contraceptive failure and unintended pregnancy. While there have been no reported cases of adverse health consequences from this mistake, Lupin has sent a recall letter to its customers and distributors to arrange a return of the recalled packages. Likewise, the company is urging those affected by this mistake to alert their doctors about the recalled tablets and return the medication to wherever they purchased it.
