Serious complications have been reported among patients implanted with Atrium C-QUR hernia mesh. Used to treat patients in need of hernia repair and reconstruction, C-QUR is different from many other mesh products out there in that its omega 3 gel coating is “all natural” and derived from fish oil. However, this coating – meant to reduce scar tissue and help the mesh stay affixed to the abdominal wall – has proven to be quite dangerous.

A number of C-QUR patients have reported instances of mesh infection and / or failure. Complications and injuries related to the defective medical device include but are not limited to:

  • Abnormal liver function
  • Bowel adhesion / obstruction
  • Chronic inflammation & ultimate encapsulation of mesh in scar tissue
  • Dental problems, including loss of teeth
  • Fistulas (formation of holes between organs and other body parts)
  • Infection, some of which cannot be treated with antibiotics
  • Mesh migration
  • Mesh shrinkage
  • Neurological problems
  • Organ perforation
  • Skin rashes

Some patients have reported chronic pain and many more have required multiple revision surgeries in order to remove the C-QUR mesh. Particularly concerning about these complications is that many of the issues do not appear immediately after surgery. In some cases, it can take months for the body to start displaying a physical reaction to the mesh.

FDA Warning

In 2012, the FDA issued a warning letter to Atrium Medical Corporation (the manufacturer of these C-QUR products). In the letter, the corporation was called out for its failure to adequately address the many complaints issued regarding the device. Since this warning, many more complications have been reported. In December of 2016, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all 21 C-QUR hernia mesh lawsuits.
