What Are the Dangers of Zofran?

What Are the Dangers of Zofran?

When you receive a prescription from a doctor, you likely aren’t worried about how that drug might be defective or dangerous. Unfortunately, patients prescribed Zofran discovered the drug to be both defective and dangerous for pregnant women.

About Zofran

Zofran is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and was created to relieve symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately, the manufacturer began to market their drug to pregnant women to treat morning sickness without first obtaining approval from the FDA. The drug was then linked to serious birth defects and complications with pregnancy.

The Side Effects

In 2013, researchers found a link between Zofran and serotonin syndrome, a dangerous condition that affects pregnant women. It has since been connected with a long list of negative side effects, some of which are life-threatening.

Potential side effects of Zofran:

  • Birth defects to
  • Serotonin syndrome
  • Cognitive and behavioral changes
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Diarrhea
  • Shivering
  • Muscle Rigidity
  • Loss of consciousness
  • High fever
  • Seizures

While the risk to pregnant women is severe, there are also a number of dangers posed to the fetus when the mother takes Zofran. The potential side effects to the fetus include heart defects, cleft lip, cleft palate, club foot, skull deformities, and developmental problems.

Were You Affected?

If you took Zofran and suffered any serious side effects, you may be eligible to seek compensation. In 2012 GlaxoSmithKline pled guilty to the civil and criminal fraud charges involving Zofran and the misleading marketing of the dangerous drug. Women who were impacted by Zofran are filing lawsuits against the drugmaker in pursuit of justice and compensation for the damages they suffered. Compensation may include repayment for pain and suffering and medical expenses.
