New research published in the European Journal of Cancer could help with the diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma in cancer patients. An international team of scientists has been able to successfully identify a new biomarker present in the blood of patients suffering from specific types of mesothelioma. As the result of a study involving 129 patients (and a control group of 45), the team discovered a significant correlation between high levels of a protein known as “activin A” and the increased volume of tumors present in the body. The group also found that patients with lower levels of the activin A protein had a longer life expectancy.

Mesothelioma can be caused by the ingestion of asbestos fibers and one of the many problems faced by doctors and sufferers of mesothelioma is the difficulty in quickly and accurately diagnosing the disease. Several forms of mesothelioma exist and the best course of treatment can differ greatly depending on the type of cancer. According to this new research, activin A has become the first biomarker to assist in the classification and identification of the types of mesothelioma. The research suggests that the most aggressive forms of the cancer are also associated with a higher volume of the protein.

One of the most important impacts of this discovery is that it can help doctors to better advise their patients on the course of medical treatment best for them. The most effective cancer treatments can lead to a prolonged life after diagnoses, but aggressive treatments also run the risk of reducing the quality of the years which a patient may have left. By being able to better identify the type of cancer early on, doctors can more easily find a balance when recommending treatments.
