Ford Motor Co. recently reached a settlement over claims that it sold defective diesel engines. In particular, the settlement affects the now discontinued 6-liter PowerStroke diesel engines installed in 2003-2007 Ford vehicles sold or leased in the Unites States (mostly Super Duty pickups and E-series vans). The components were manufactured by Navistar International, a former diesel engine supplier for Ford.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuits claimed that the diesel engine contained defects resulting in “poor performance and expensive repair bills.” Some of the “failures were so severe that Ford had to replace complete engines.” The settlement covers reimbursements for repair and replacements affecting certain engine components – the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler, EGR valve, oil cooler, fuel injector(s), or turbocharger.

The settlement resolves a class-action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co., and entitles purchasers and lessees of the affected vehicles to “claim between $50 and $825 in reimbursement.”
