Xarelto is an anticoagulant drug that is prescribed as a blood thinner, commonly used for stroke patients to prevent blood clots. The drug, developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer, was approved by the FDA in 2011. While intended to save patients from dangerous blood clots, Xarelto has instead caused numerous adverse reactions and even fatalities in patients. In 2012 , the FDA reported that three times more people died from adverse events while taking Xarelto compared to another, established drug with similar indications: warfarin. There may be alternatives to Xarelto that are much safer for patients.
Xarelto has been known to cause dangerous side effects in patients, one of the most serious being uncontrollable bleeding with no known treatment. Patients who have had hip or knee replacement procedures are reported to be at a greater risk of suffering adverse effects such as wound infections and leakage. Certain drugs may also react adversely when taken with Xarelto.
Complications from Xarelto include:
As of April 2015, there were more than 400 cases in the Xarelto MDL (multi-district litigation) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Lawsuits against Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals continue to be filed.
