Defective Drug Litigation for Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents

Gadolinium is a chemical element that is used during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) procedures. Once this chemical element is injected, it acts as a contrast agent to provide a greater contrast between normal and abnormal body tissues, which provides for the easier detection of uncommon cell growths and tumors.

Recently, gadolinium has been the subject of well-documented cases linking nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NSF/NFD) to gadolinium exposure patients who suffer from severe kidney disorders and have been exposed to gadolinium-based contrast agents. NSF and NFD are diseases that cause fibrosis of the skin, muscles and connective tissues. Over time, the effects of these diseases may worsen and can even cause death.

Many gadolinium side effects were discovered in 1997 and may include:

  • Acute or chronic renal conditions
  • Swelling, hardening or tightening of the skin
  • Reddened or darkened patches on the skin
  • Raised yellow spots on the whites of the eyes
  • Joint stiffness
  • Deep pains in the hip bones or ribs

Other associated conditions that can cause NSF/NFD include kidney dysfunction due to hepatorenal syndrome or complications surrounding a liver transplant.

Currently, there are many treatments being utilized for patients with NSF/NFD, which include Photopheresis, oral steroids, Pentoxyfilline, Plasmapheresis, physical therapy and other medications. It has been shown that a person may develop gadolinium side effects after only a single injection of a gadolinium-based contrast agent. Manufacturers have not fully informed doctors and patients about the risks associated with the drug, including NSF/NFD.
